My first year teaching, I was mostly excited about decorating my classroom and making it feel like a home for my future students. It can feel overwhelming and daunting at first not knowing what supplies you’ll actually need. But here’s the truth — you really don’t need much to get started.
Everything you invest in now can last you for years. In fact, I bought these items my first year teaching and still use the same supplies 7 years later. Over time, you’ll add to your collection of “teacher faves,” but these are my non-negotiables.
1. Ticonderoga Pencils
These are my all-time favorite pencils. I know it’s “just a pencil,” but when you have 15+ students writing all day, you need the good stuff. Your class may donate pencils at the start of the year, but trust me you’ll need more. Buy extra (pre-sharpened is a lifesaver!).
2. Glue Sticks
In the primary grades, you’ll be cutting and pasting constantly. You’ll go through glue sticks like water, so stock up! They’re quick, easy, and way less messy than liquid glue.
3. Giant Sticky Notes
Perfect for creating anchor charts. I reuse these every single year. You can make them ahead of time or create them with your students.
4. Poster Markers
The more color, the better! Kids love bright visuals, and these markers make your charts pop.
5. Hanging File Organizer + File Folders
Keep all student work and important papers organized. Assign each student their own folder — you’ll thank yourself later.
6. Pocket Chart
Great for displaying vocabulary words, sight words, or daily schedules.
7. Swingline Heavy Duty Stapler
This thing can handle all the bulletin boards, student packets, and classroom projects you throw at it.
8. Heavy Duty Hole Punch
Punches multiple sheets at once for easy binder organization.
9. Scotch Tape Dispenser
A classic. Always keep one at your desk — you’ll use it constantly.
10. X-Acto Pencil Sharpener
A quality sharpener is worth every penny. Mine lasted 7 years and survived the occasional “student puts the wrong thing inside” mishap.
11. High-Quality Scissors
You’ll be cutting a lot. Invest in a comfortable, sharp pair.
12. Laminator + Laminating Sheets
One of my fave items on the list. Protect posters, decor, and student projects so they last for years.
13. Paper Cutter
Cuts your prep time in half (literally!)
14. Expo Markers
If you have a whiteboard, you’ll fly through markers. I prefer black ink only, but that’s personal preference.
15. Clear Storage Bins – Small, Medium, & Large
Perfect for organizing everything from supplies to books to seasonal decor. I love clear bins so I can see exactly what’s inside, and I add cute labels to match my classroom theme.
💡 Final Tip: Start small, focus on quality, and build your collection over time. These essentials will make your first year smoother and your classroom more functional — while lasting you for many years to come.
